Hifumi Game

Kaitakushi Rules

Overview

Kaitakushi is a settlement game that was inspired by Catan. Gather resources, build roads and settlements, and be the first player to reach 10 victory points.

This page summarizes the basic rules. Details may change in future updates.

Initial setup

The game is played with 4 players. Each player places 2 settlements and 2 roads.

In seat order, each player places one settlement and one adjacent road.

Then, in reverse seat order, each player places a second settlement and road.

After placing the second settlement, take one resource card from each adjacent tile.

The robber starts on the desert tile.

Resources and production

Each tile produces one of five resources: lumber, brick, wool, grain, or ore. The number on a tile is its dice roll.

On your turn, roll the dice. Players with settlements or cities adjacent to tiles matching the roll receive resource cards.

Cities produce twice as many resources as settlements. Desert tiles do not produce resources.

Building

Roads connect settlements and cities and count toward the longest road. Settlements are worth 1 VP; cities are worth 2 VP.

Settlements and cities must be built at least two intersections away from any other settlement or city.

Trading

Trade with other players or with the bank through harbors to exchange resource cards in your hand.

Building costs

  • Road
    1 lumber + 1 brick → 1 road
  • Settlement
    1 lumber + 1 brick + 1 wool + 1 grain → 1 settlement (+1 VP)
  • City
    2 grain + 3 ore → upgrade a settlement to a city (+1 VP)
  • Development card
    1 wool + 1 grain + 1 ore → 1 development card (type is random)

Development cards

You cannot play a development card on the turn you buy it. You may play only one development card per turn.

Victory point cards cannot be played. Keep them hidden in your hand; they count toward victory.

  • Knight (14 cards)
May be played before rolling the dice. Move the robber and steal 1 resource card from an adjacent player. The first player to play 3 knights earns Largest Army (+2 VP).
  • Victory point (5 cards)
Cannot be played. Keep hidden in your hand; counts as +1 VP.
  • Road building (2 cards)
    Build 2 roads for free.
  • Year of plenty (2 cards)
Take 2 resource cards of your choice from the bank.
  • Monopoly (2 cards)
Name one resource. Every other player must give you all of their cards of that resource.

Bank and harbor trades

Build a settlement or city on either vertex of a harbor to use that harbor's trade rate.

  • Standard trade
4 of the same resource → 1 resource of your choice
  • 3:1 harbor
3 of the same resource → 1 resource of your choice
  • 2:1 harbor
2 of the resource matching the harbor color → 1 resource of your choice (e.g. 2 lumber at a lumber harbor)

The robber

When the dice total is 7, the robber moves. Players with 8 or more cards discard half their resource cards, then the active player moves the robber, chooses one player adjacent to the tile the robber moved to, and randomly steals 1 resource card from them.

The tile under the robber does not produce resources until the robber moves again.

Longest road and largest army

  • Longest road (+2 VP)
Awarded to the player with at least 5 connected road segments and the longest continuous road. If another player builds a longer road, the bonus moves to them. If tied, the previous holder keeps it.
  • Largest army (+2 VP)
Awarded to the player who has played 3 or more knight cards. If another player plays more knights, the bonus moves to them. If tied, the previous holder keeps it.

Winning

Earn victory points from settlements, cities, development cards, longest road, and largest army. The first player to reach 10 points wins.
